Flagstone Writer's Block Pinotage  2000

Pinotage from Kanonkop is still recognised as the finest example of the variety in South Africa and has encouraged great progress. At a recent tasting, the range of 2000s seemed full of fruit and character, my favourite being the Flagstone Writer's Block from a winery owned by the Jack family right on the waterfront in Cape Town. By chilling grapes overnight, Bruce Jack can vinify with less sulphur and produce a more naturally fruity wine. This he has certainly done with his limited release 2000. Deep velvety colour, very good fruit and fine use of oak, great potential complexity and excellent balancing acidity. This will develop very interesting flavours over the next few years.
